Today is World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD).
In 1865, the first International Telegraph Convention was signed, when the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) was founded. Since 1969, this date has been celebrated as World Telecommunications Day, and since 2007 as World Telecommunications and Information Society Day.
The purpose of celebrating the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day is to raise awareness of the possibilities offered by the use of the Internet and other information and communication technologies and how their use can lead to the improvement of digital literacy, which all contribute to social and economic development.
This year's slogan is: "Strengthening less developed countries through information and communication technologies".
